2017- DECEMBER HOLIDIVA DAY
This post, 2017 – December Holidiva Day - was written by Diva Glinda/AKA Annie in
Austin for the Divas of the Dirt blog.
We Divas of the Dirt sneaked that last garden day into the
2017 schedule in the nick of time. Just a few days later the pleasant
gardening weather was gone and the arrival of a cold front, some rain, a touch
of frost and a dusting of snow let us know that it really was December.
We were all in the mood to go to Buffy’s house for the annual Holidiva Day
lunch and the gift-stealing game.
When I arrived hostess Buffy was cooking and Sophia was
constructing an enormous salad. Annie, Buffy and Mindy went into the dining
room to set the table – Mindy showed off her origami skills by making the
napkins into Birds-of-Paradise. Fun!
The early afternoon sun cast shadows over the room, adding a
bit of magic.
We love the traditional Poinsettia cocktails – another Mindy
speciality. (Yes, I said speciality instead of specialty… have I
watched too much Brit TV of late?)
Along with Poinsettias Buffy had eggnog and wine. Diva Annie
and hostess Buffy raised a toast to friendship. They’ve been part of this group
for almost 20 years.
The appetizers this year were brought by me, Glinda. I made
a cold crab dip and a hot spinach-artichoke dip with assorted crackers.
We had our favorite cocktails, stuff to munch, and good
friends to share them with – Karla, Glinda and Annie are happy to be here.

Buffy, Mindy, Annie, Karla, Mattie, Sophia, Glinda and Sugar
were all present and ready for lunch. What was on the menu for 2017?
Sophia likes salads that surprise – in addition to expected
salad ingredients like small tomatoes, red onions, croutons and lovely greens
this huge bowl had olives, hearts of palm and Ciliegine – those perfect little
cherry-sized balls of fresh mozzarella.
Buffy’s elegant choice of entrĂ©e was greeted with delight –
Prime Rib Roast. I didn’t write it down, but am pretty sure there was
horseradish sauce.
Buffy decided the way to add puffy goodness to Prime Rib
would be individual Yorkshire Puddings.
Mattie found a long, slow recipe from Ree Drummond of the
Pioneer Woman. Look at these Burgundy Mushrooms, with red wine and dill seed.
They cooked for more than nine hours.
Mindy loves roasted vegetables – she made Special Roasted
Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic vinegar.
Annie also used a recipe from Ree Drummond of the Pioneer
Woman – yummy Hasselback potatoes.
Karla turned to a recipe from Juniper Hills Farm in Dripping
Springs to make Honey Roasted Carrots with walnuts, raisins and mint.
After lunch, Buffy’s son snapped this photo of the Divas of
the Dirt. Thank you!
Mattie knew that pups like special lunches, too. She shared
little bits of the prime rib with her dog Barbie, Buffy’s Fredric and the
chihuahua sisters Lynda & Luci.
Watching the dogs cavort with Mattie was great post-lunch
entertainment!
The gifts under the tree were ready for the stealing game.
But first things first – we’d been looking at that sparkly
winter-scene cake for a loooong time! Sugar had put together layers of
gingerbread cake and cream cheese frosting, topped it with a small gingerbread
house and then arranged trees made of inverted rosemary, all presented on a
base that looked like a slice of tree trunk… very special.
Look at those layers of gingerbready goodness.
We drew numbers from a bowl and Mattie had first choice. She
unwrapped a heavy cast metal figure of a Painted Bunting brought by Buffy.
Mindy chose a burlap bag brought by Mattie and found another
bird-themed gift… a metal hummingbird sculpture. (Sorry it’s so hard to see
against the dark tree.)
Sophia unveiled an artistic gift brought by Annie – a metal
peacock and plant peg. A third metal bird? Is this a theme?
Mattie liked the bunting statue but she didn’t get to keep
it… Glinda’s turn was next and she stole the bird.
Since her original choice had been swiped, Mattie went for a
new choice – it turned out to be a Blue Butterfly coir mat brought by Glinda.
See that bag Annie is holding in the photo? She thought the
hummingbird sculpture was just her style and on the next turn she swiped the
hummingbird from Mindy.
With the hummingbird gone, Mindy got a new turn – she
unwrapped a set of extremely decorative but rather bossy letters on sticks from
Sugar.
Annie didn’t hold onto the swag-bag for too long. Sugar’s
turn was next so she restole the hummingbird and with the rules in her favor,
got to keep it.
On her next try Annie unwrapped a beautiful ceramic basket
brought by Mindy. It also looks like Annie’s style, doesn’t it?
Karla opened a gift from Sophia – a beautiful glass globe.
Don’t you love the way the light in the room makes Karla look like a fortune
teller looking into a crystal ball?
Finally our hostess Buffy had her turn. (Whenever Buffy sits
down she immediately has a lapful of chihuahuas.) She unwrapped a very cool
metal hoop-shaped mobile from Karla.
The year ahead would be challenging but our Holidiva Day was
pretty perfect. As our musician friend Bob says – Peace and Love, everyone!

2016 - DECEMBER HOLIDIVA DAY
This post, 2016 December – HOLIDIVA DAY, was written by
Annie in Austin/ Diva Glinda for the Diva of the Dirt blog,
divasofthedirt.blogspot.com
[Wow- this post is about our 2016 Christmas party – a whole
year ago! I really got behind on posting but will try to catch up soon.]
The Divas of the Dirt gathered at Karla’s house in 2016 and
she was ready for us with the Christmas tree tall and decorated
and the table gilded and elegant. Sugar was Karla’s
co-hostess – bringing the entree.
It had been a while since we were all together! Mindy, Sugar
and Mattie had a lot of catching up to do.
Sophia, Karla, Glinda and Buffy were glad to be there – but
where is DivaAnnie? She was behind the camera for these photos but you’ll see
her later!
Drinks and appetizers were first – Mindy has a choice of
Smoked Salmon Dip and Love Dip from Costco with assorted crackers (Diva Annie)
and Cocktail meatballs with bread rounds (Glinda) and assorted wines from many
Divas
Sophia is enjoying this day off work surrounded by her
friends
Buffy listens intently
Here is the holidiva feast! Clockwise from back: an enormous
Glazed Ham with Redeye Gravy (Sugar), Salad of Butter Lettuce, Walnuts, Apples,
Cheddar and Pomegranate (Mindy) Super Rich Mashed Potatoes (Sophia), Carrots
with Pecans (Buffy), and Addictive Asparagus and Cheese Grits (Karla).
Every single thing was delicious and/or dangerous – if you
have ever had Karla’s cheese grits you will know they are as addictive as the
asparagus!
We decided to delay dessert and play the stealing-grab bag
game, pulling numbers and opening the packages in turn.
Here is Mindy unwrapping a package while Annie looks on.
Mattie likes these chains of metal bluebirds but she won’t
have them long… this is a Stealing Grab bag game!
It’s Annie’s turn now… Sugar and Mindy wonder what she’ll
get
Uh, oh – game delayed while Annie uses the bow to turn
herself into an Old Tyme Carol Singer
Mindy got a decorative plant stake and thinks it’s a winner.
Mattie made the pecan pie with a gluten free crust – topped
with vanilla ice cream
There’s something amusing about eating pie made with pecan
nuts under the watchful eye of a couple of nutcrackers!
This photo of Sugar, Buffy and Karla reminds me of the best
part of our Holidiva Day – laughing with friends.
It was a great day – see you next year!

2015 DECEMBER - Holidiva Day
This post, 2015 December Holidiva Day, was written by Diva Glinda/Annie in Austin for the Divas of the Dirt blog
Can you believe it’s been 10 years since Diva Annie had a turn at hosting the annual Holidiva party? She decided to go all out! There would be a traditional roasted turkey with bread and sausage stuffing as the entrĂ©e. Soon we were all emailing back and forth as we decided on appetizers, sides and dessert.
The day of the party Sophia and I arrived first – we were bringing appetizers so did not want to be late. The Central Texas weather had been warm, muggy and drizzly – no Yule logs were wanted today – this December we were grateful for air-conditioning!
I forgot my camera back when Annie was hostess in 2005, so that post had no pictures. (Just thinking about this still makes me sad.) This year there would be photos! Lots of photos!
Annie’s Shrimp plants were in full corally-pink bloom
and everyone’s favorite ‘Patrick’ Abutilon was covered in beautiful bells.
Every inch of Annie’s house was decorated and it looked so pretty! From the fireplace mantle
To the sideboard
to the plume trees covered in vintage ornaments
to the dainty miniature holiday village all was perfect!
Annie had her part of the dinner under control but was glad to have Sophia for company in the kitchen
We snapped a few photos of each other while we were waiting for the rest of the Divas.
Glinda and Annie stand near the beautiful sideboard
No garden hats! No garden gloves! No work clothes! Will anyone recognize Glinda and Sophia?
The table dĂ©cor was imaginative and fun – Annie used poinsettia-themed vintage china and glassware from her mother’s collection, displayed to advantage against the soft green of the tablecloths, then filled planters with ornaments. Don’t you just love the shapes of the poinsettia bowls?
The table and chairs were ready for eight Divas of the Dirt.
The appetizer table looked great! Sophia brought two warm cheeses, one Camembert & Walnuts and the other Brie with Cranberries. She also brought French bread and assorted crackers to serve them on. Anne contributed tortilla chips and Glinda made the guacamole. Soon after this photo was taken, Sugar arrived with a delicious creamy hot artichoke dip to add to this bounty.
Annie had prosecco and cranberry juice ready for the first guests. In a little while Mindy came to the party with another bottle of prosecco and more juice. And a little while after that, Buffy arrived bearing a third bottle – has prosecco become our Signature Beverage?
Longtime friends Mattie and Karla always find something to laugh about
Sophia and Mindy are glad to be here
Longtime friends Sugar and Buffy look pretty amused, too!
What a feast! Perfectly roasted turkey with bread & sausage stuffing made by Annie; Karla’s dish of Special Asparagus made eating your vegetables a treat. Mattie’s Crunchy Mixed Kale salad was a hit and the Butternut, Baby Green, Pistachio & Blueberry Salad from Mindy turned everyone into salad fans.
I don’t know if Sugar’s Fancy Mashed Potatoes had secret ingredients but they were addictive!
Buffy’s Cranberry Sauce went way beyond the ordinary and the Rolls were perfection.
Sophia and Mattie were glad to escape from their demanding jobs and spend the day relaxing together
Karla, Mindy and Buffy know how to enjoy every minute they spend together
We did not rush, appreciating the work put into making every dish delicious. After we finished our lunch, we decided dessert could wait a while. We folded one of the tables, began the cleanup process and got ready to play the traditional swap & steal game with the gifts.
As the late afternoon winter light turned the room golden, we began to play. After many rounds and some hysterical laughter we all had a gift to take home. (Blame some of the unfocused photos on how much everyone was laughing.)
Diva Annie won this cool birdhouse made in Africa of sustainable materials - brought by Mattie.
Glinda brought bronze metal mushrooms on springy stems – Mattie and Karla each held onto them for one turn but those fungi went home with Sophia.
Annie found cool copper poppies on long stems – Glinda got these (and they look fabulous in my garden!)
Buffy brought a black garden trug and really good gloves from the Natural Gardener – taken home by Karla
Diva gifts tend to come in odd shapes and the wrapping can be very creative – what could be inside this big plastic sack?
Aha! Mindy had hidden a decorative spade with attached birdhouse inside the sack … Sophia opened it but Mattie quickly stole it!
Sugar brought cool garden signs (one from Maine) and Mindy won them
Karla brought a Metal Centerpiece with Mason Jars for candles or flowers – Sugar took it home.
Sophia brought a big metal rooster disguised in a storage bin – oh, my – Buffy was quite pleased to win this prize!
Dessert was an experiment. I (Glinda) wanted to make something with the Almond, egg, raisin and Amaretto flavors of our traditional Amaretto Bread Pudding, but without the gluten – a problem for some of us.
When an episode of the Great British Bake Off on PBS/KLRU introduced me to the Joconde-sponge-based Opera Cake, it seemed like a fun idea to try. Layers of eggy, no-flour sponge were alternated with an almond, amaretto, golden raisin and fig filling and a chocolate-amaretto buttercream frosting, decorated with holly sprinkles to look festive
We missed the creamy soupyness of the bread pudding but the flavours (oops, been watching those Brit shows too much - that should be flavors) were spot on.
We drove home through drizzly fog, glad for another happy Holidiva day.
